Lover of romance movies? You’re in the right place then! I choose some of my favorite romantic movies and paired them with a book. So if you loved this movie, then you might like this book kind of thing! I feel like this is such a good way to get non readers to branch out and pick up books! Sometimes it just takes one really good book to start an addiction! This list was really inspired by the movie Set it up on Netflix, after watching that I kept thinking, “Are there other movies that remind me of books?” So that thought brought me here, and I hope you guys enjoy this list I made for you!
1. 13 Going on 30
Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins
Such a classic man! This is one of my go to movies when I want a good romance! There is just something about Mark Ruffalo in that movie *sigh* Sweet Matty... Anyways Lola and the Boy Next door is perfect for fans of this movie! Not only do we have the sweet childhood friendship that blossoms into more, we also have a really creative female character and really just something about her reminded me of Jenna..... (maybe because they're both fashion designers) It’s really so similar it’s crazy, you get the same kind of feels while reading this book as you do watching the movie. I love both so much and definitely recommend giving this book a try if you loved 13 going on 30!
2. Leap Year
On Dublin Street by Samantha Young
This is on Netflix by the way, just a little PSA! I love this movie, it’s so cute and funny. It really does remind me of On Dublin Street by Samantha Young. Both are set in Ireland, and both have strong female characters who end up around men they can’t stand (but end up falling for). There is just something about a relationship that starts with dislike that is so comical!!! Now in this book the female character doesn’t have a fiance, but everything else is very similar. The relationship especially! Our main couple starts off running into each other, and it’s Jocelyn’s first time in the city and she has no idea the man she just bumped into is her new roommates brother. Sparks and tension flies, and Jocelyn is determined to not let the cocky Irish guy get in her way, or her heart! So I wholeheartedly believe lovers of Leap Year will love this book! FYI it is an adult romance!
So if you didn’t know Clueless is a loose adaption of Emma by Jane Austen, and I would have picked Emma for you guys.... but I had a better pick ! Because of Miss Bridgerton is perfect for lovers of Clueless! When I read this book I got major Emma vibes too, so the story line is very very similar. We have a main female character who lives next door to a family she has known all of her life. There is one brother that lives next door that she can’t stand however, George Rokesby. Definitely a slow build relationship just like Josh and Cher in the movie, it even has the same trope where they can’t stand each other at first but after a while they end up falling in love. Even the characters in the book reminded me of Josh and Cher! The scenes between George and Billie were HILARIOUS, and George treats Billie just like Josh does. An annoying little girl he’s known all of his life, until she isn't ; ) Uh I’m so excited about this pairing, it’s the perfect this and that. Truly if you loved Clueless you’ll love this book!
4. Sweet Home Alabama
The Simple Wild by K.A. Tucker
This is probably my second pairing I’m super excited about!! Sweet Home Alabama is one of my all time favorite movies, and it just happens that The Simple Wild is one of my all time favorite books! They’re so similar it’s crazy! Both have stubborn country boys, both have high maintenance city girls, and both are full of so much tension! Jonah, our main character in the book, is so much like Jake from the movie, it's funny! Jonah knows from the minute he sees Calla that this city girl won’t last five minutes in the country. And he’s almost right, the scene where Calla was running and the flies kept attacking her had me laughing out loud! Oh, and there was a scene that reminded me so much of Jake from Sweet Home Alabama! Calla is getting ready and a raccoon comes into her house, and she’s screaming and Jonah runs over to see what’s going on and just starts laughing. The raccoon was his pet raccoon!! (How more country can you get) So many scenes in this book had me laughing out loud. This is the perfect match for Sweet Home Alabama lovers, and I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did!5. Set It Up
The Hating Game by Sally Thorne
Just so you guys know the book I choose for this is getting a movie of it’s own (I can’t wait), but this book is still perfect for lovers of the Netflix original Set It Up. I had heard through the book community that these two were similar so I jumped on Netflix to check it out for myself..and they were right! The Hating Game is probably one of my top five books of all time, so really I recommend this book to anyone but especially to people who loved this movie! Josh and Lucy work in an office, and well...they can’t stand each other. Let office schemes and romances begin! This book is hilarious, and the characters in the movie really reminded me of Josh and Lucy if they were a bit...nicer? The Hating Game definitely leans more towards enemies to lovers then Set It Up, also the book is funnier... Just Saying. I loved the movie but nothing compares to this book! I’m getting off track a bit because I love this book so much! Anyways definitely check this book out if you loved this movie..OR if you love The Hating Game and haven’t seen this movie, run (don’t walk) to Netflix!6. 10 Things I Hate About You
Arrogant Devil by R.S. Grey
It’s hard for anything to compare to this gem of a movie. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of watching it. However Arrogant Devil by R.S. Grey comes pretty close! This book isn’t set in high school so we do have an older set of characters, but the plot is similar! Both sets of characters start off as enemies or in a mutual state of dislike and eventually (slowly) become more. The book is almost as funny as the movie, and I loved reading Meredith and Jack’s early scenes when the bickering was still on full blast! R.S. Grey really writes hilarious romance books, and I recommend her to really anyone who is a fan of rom coms! But Arrogant Devil in particular is great for fans of 10 things I hate about you!!
7. The Proposal
The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren
Who doesn’t love The Proposal!?! One of the funniest romances of all time, and can I just say..Ryan Reynolds in that movie.... DANG. If you loved that movie then there is a 98% chance you’re going to fall in love with The Unhoneymooners! This is a fake marriage book, but in a different way then The Proposal. In the book Ethan and Olive have to pretend to be married on their vacation because it’s not really just a vacation. Olive’s sister won the honeymoon from a giveaway and when the entire wedding party (besides Ethan and Olive who didn’t eat from the buffet) gets food poisoning, Olive’s twin sister asks her to go in her place so it isn’t wasted. Ethan’s brother (who is the groom and no they're not twins) gets the same idea and tells his brother to go. They both agree, the only problem is they didn’t know that they’d be going with each other. They quickly decide to put aside their differences (hatred) and enjoy this vacation. They just didn’t plan on running into Olive’s new boss, and Ethan’s ex girlfriend. As tensions rise Ethan and Olive have to pretend to be a happy newlywed couple so they don’t get in trouble and charged for the entire vacation! This book is straight comedy filled with crazy sexual tension! If you love a good forbidden romance with a twist of enemies to lovers and a fake marriage trope then definitely check this out. Like I said, fans of The Proposal will LOVE this book!8. Legally Blonde
The Chase by Elle Kennedy
This book is another perfect match! I really believe fans of Legally Blonde will love The Chase by Elle Kennedy! Our main female character Summer is just like Elle. She’s very high maintenance and multiple times throughout the book she gets compared to a barbie doll, and just like Elle Woods she wants everyone to see her differently. Enter our crazy sexy roommate named Fitz who is crazy smart and Summer can’t help but fall for him. The thing is, Fitz has only ever seen Summer as the ditzy city girl and she’s going to have to try everything to show him the real Summer. Not only is our main couple similar to Elle and Emmett, we also get a sleazy professor who pulls the same moves on Summer. I swear if Legally Blonde was a movie in 2019, it would be just like The Chase. Definitely check this book out if you’re a fan of the movie. You’re in for a good laugh and overall wonderful romance!
9. Pretty Woman
Most of All You by Mia Sheridan and
The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang
Since I only have nine on this list the last one comes with two books! Pretty Woman is a classic, and just about everyone I know loves this movie. Both of my options are perfect for this! Most of all you is a little more emotional, but our main female character, Crystal, is taken in by Gabriel who helps her heal and move on from her past life. (she’s a stripper, but not the good kind) The dynamic between the two characters is very obvious not just to us, but to Crystal too. She knows Gabriel is a good guy, and yet she can’t help but be drawn to him. This book is almost right on the dot for Pretty Woman if the movie had a little less laughter and a little bit more emotion. So definitely check out this one if you love the movie but want a more emotional and gripping read. Now the Kiss Quotient is perfect if you want a lighthearted laugh-out-loud romance. Our main character Stella hires the escort Michael to teach her how to not only be good at sex, but at relationships. Stella has autism, and really wants to be able to be intimate with the guy she likes at work. So what does she do? Hires Michael. What didn’t she plan on doing? Falling for Michael. This book is Pretty Woman if the genders were swapped, it’s perfect for fans of this movie, and I know you’ll be laughing out loud and enjoying this book as much as I did!Alright guys, I hope you found at least one book (or movie) and you’re on your way to finding your next favorite book! If I end up finding more I’ll either add to this list or do a part two! I love doing fun things like this, and if you have any movie or book recommendations let me know! xo
