When Joss Met Matt

“You know, at a fancy restaurant, you get sorbet between courses.
To cleanse your palate.”
This book has been on my TBR for a hot minute. Like I’m talking yearsssss. Part of me didn’t want to pick this up because of the low rating on Goodreads.. I know, I know! I won’t make that same mistake again because I absolutely loved When Joss met Matt!
What if after every bad breakup, there was someone to help “cleanse your palate”—someone who wouldn’t judge you, who was great in bed, someone you were sure not to fall in love with? “Sorbet sex” could solve everything—as long as it never got too sweet.
Joss and Matt have been friends since freshman year of college, meeting one night after Joss is dumped by her boyfriend. After a few drinks, Matt humors her with a proposition: that he’ll become her go-to guy whenever she needs to heal a broken heart. In return, she’ll do the same for him. The #1 Rule: They’ll never fall in love with each other. People scoff at the arrangement. But six years later, Joss and Matt are still the best of friends . . . with benefits.
Through a string of boyfriends and girlfriends—some almost perfect, some downright wrong—Joss and Matt are always there for each other when the going gets tough. No strings. No attachments. Piece of cake. No problem. After all, since they wrote the rules, surely they can play by them. Or can they?
This books is exactly what you’d think it would be, fun and an easy read! I loved the friends to lovers trope (even if it was a friends with benefits situation). Every time I read a book with that trope I think of the movie Just Friends with Ryan Reynolds, and this book is so cute that I could 100% see it becoming a movie! It’s been published for a few years now, so one of my suggestions is to not expect to much going in to it. It’s not going to be completely unoffensive, and of course the romance is not super healthy, but really if you go in with the right mind and not really think to much about it you’ll love it!
The main characters were so cute! Matt and Joss were perfect and the entire time I kept waiting for them to realize how crazy in love they were!! Also kudos to the author for taking a very lighthearted almost cheesy read and not completely destroying the plot! I also want to give credit to the fact that we get to see these characters grow over a lengthy period of time and we see them mature. So yes it does take a while for our main characters to get together but it’s worth it because when they do get together it’s the right time for both of them, and it makes the relationship feel almost realistic and true.
So the characters, I loved Matt. He’s that nice guy that you love to well...love! Almost adorable! He so sweet and really he’s perfect for Joss even when she can’t see it for like 89% of this book! Even though he’s a nice guy, don’t let that fool you. At no time is he ever really friend zoned and made too nice that you don’t want him to be with our main character. Some times authors do make characters way to nice and then as the reader you just can’t really see anything past that friendship and almost like no spark is there. Matt and Joss are full of spark, and the way the author builds them is perfect!
Joss was so relatable, I loved how she was like Miss America. She was pretty but she also knew she had faults. A lot of female characters in romances tend to end up thinking wither A. they’re the hottest person on the planet or B. They look like a cat’s butt hole. So it was refreshing to see a normal freaking girl! Can we also talk about how much she loves animals? SAME. That was one of my favorite parts about Joss! The scenes where she would talk to her cat had me laughing out loud...and also completely relatable.... (who doesn’t talk to their animals)
So just remember, this is not award winning writing or an epic plot, but the story is cute and adorable, and one of the best friends to lover tropes I’ve read! If you’re like me and can literally just read a book without needing it to have a deeper meaning then check this book out!
If you have read this book and loved it then you should check out Be The Girl by K.A. Tucker!
