Pestilence

Pestilence (The Four Horseman)

3/5 Stars

“Getting angry at one of the horsemen of the apocalypse

for bringing about the end of man

is like getting angry at ice for being cold.”

Pestilence, War, Famine, Death. All four horseman making their march to Earth. To end the world and all humanity. After four years Pestilence resurfaces and is the lone horseman on Earth. Soon plague begins to spread and the man responsible can not be killed. Too bad nobody told Sara Burns that. Drawing the short straw, literally, Sara stays behind in her town to do the impossible. Kill the horseman. Waiting in hiding Sara soon gets her chance and shoots Pestilence off his horse and sets him a flame... Only he doesn’t die. Sara who is now his prisoner sets across the world and watches as Plague spreads, but the longer she is with him the more her doubts grow and her feelings change.
This book started off so strong, and I was surprised by that because I didn’t really have high hopes going into it. I was scrolling kindle unlimited when I saw it and one clicked it because it seemed interesting and different, and IT WAS. I loved literally 95% of this book, but the ending literally dropped this book from a likely 4.5 to a 3-3.3 pushing it. So to start off with I loved the idea of Pestilence and Sara potentially having a relationship. Weird, I know right? but you kind of just go with it. Pestilence was exactly how I thought he was going to be. Strong, Cocky, Sexy, Powerful, and completely ignorant of Sara. What I was surprised by was that he was also clueless and adorable and I found myself smiling at some of the interactions between him and Sara. Sara was also exactly like I thought she’d be, and I was dying with her internal dialogue. Girl had me laughing, and I loved how real she seemed. I literally died when she named Pestilence’s horse Trixie Skilllz. Probably one of the best parts of this book! They spent literally 75% of this book hating and bickering with each other, and full of sexual tension which I loved! What I didn’t love was that the closer to the end that we got I felt like most of the time it was just Sara contemplating her feelings. Do I love him? Am I wrong for loving him? Will I ever really be able to let myself love him? Like geez girl, you LOVE him., get over it. Also I hate how Pestilence ended up, and this is what really ruined the book for me. He became a lovesick sappy guy who would rather give up everything he’s ever know for a woman. Now I’m not saying that isn’t the sweetest thing ever, I wish most men were like that but come on. HE WAS PESTILENCE THE CONQUEROR. POWERFUL AND SEXY. Also probably why 99.9% of the people who picked up this book read it. I was intrigued by him being Pestilence and so when he just decided to throw it all to the wind and turn into a Colleen Hoover type of love interest I was done. I was even more done when he gave up being Pestilence, in a sense. I mean he is still Pestilence and forever will be but he gave up everything that was important to him when he was Pestilence and that symbolized to him that he was no longer the conqueror. Just Victor. Okay Like wtf Victor. P.s. that’s what he names himself when he shows up love sick on Sara’s front door. Mind you after she LEFT him. So alright bye, I was over this like I said in the beginning at like 95%. Such a shame too because it could have been so perfect. Oh well! *sigh*
One question I keep debating is will I pick up the next book in this series? Part of me doesn’t want to because I don’t know if I can handle anything more like that, but writers do get better with each book and it’s unfair to say that this book was horrible because it wasn’t. Just the ending. So maybe I will give the next one a shot because, well war is coming ;)
