2018 Failures

It’s January 1st, 2018 and I’m setting my reading goal to 65 books. January Ashleigh is super excited about her reading list and the 2018 future releases. DECEMBER 31st Ashleigh is shaking her head. Yes I exceeded my reading goal, buuuuuuttt there were quite a few books I didn’t get to that I really wanted to. These are books that I was super excited for and was 100% sure I was going to read them. I’’m honestly really surprised that I didn’t, especially with some of the ones I’m going to mention. Gonna be honest with y’all, all but one of these is YA Fantasy and I blame it on Romance for distracting me!!! Ugh I love me some good romance!

Anyways, these are the books that I wanted, but didn’t end up getting to in 2018!

1. Queen Of Air And Darkness by Cassandra Clare

So I’m going to go ahead and get this one over with because I’m sure I just broke some kind of sacrilegious right by not reading this one, but to be fair it did release earlier this month but still. With every other book in this series I had that crap on preorder or I was at B&N that SAME day. I have no excuse y’all, I really don’t. I’m just as flabbergasted as you guys and seeing it blasted all over Instagram this month has really made me regret not picking it up ASAP. But that changes today because I ordered it on B&N and it should arrive on Jan 2nd. SO sadly I won’t be reading this in 2018, but I feel like I’ll jump into it as soon as it arrives. I’m preparing myself because I’ve heard nothing but good things! I feel like I don’t need to explain what this series is about because it’s SO popular, and honestly I probably couldn’t explain anything to you without spoiling it because this is like a whole thing guys, a huge series. Yes this particular series only has three books but Cassandra Clare has a whole world and just SO MUCH. So yeah, I’m shocked and surprised to find myself saying I didn’t get to this book in 2018. ( What’s wrong with me!!!!!! )

2. The Darkest Star by Jennifer L. Armentrout

This is another book that I am shocked I didn’t get to, like I was so pumped when I heard Jennifer L. Armentrout was releasing this. I LOVED The Lux series and I literally squealed with excitement to see the world of The Luxen would continue. This follows the first series with all new characters and I’m honestly super excited.

This follows Evie Dasher who was young during the first war with the Luxen. Unfortunately as a result of the war, Evie loses her father and eventually forms a tumultuous relationship with The Luxen. She ends up finding herself caught up in a raid at one of the few places that the remaining Luxen and humans can mingle. It’s here that she meets Luc, and at first she thinks he’s Luxen but quickly finds out he’s so much more, and so much more dangerous then she ever imagined. She soon gets caught up in his world, and the more she ends up knowing the more in danger she gets.

If you’re wondering what the heck a Luxen is, it’s an Alien. Yes you heard right. An Alien. It works though guys I promise! JL Armentrouts first series was about a girl who falls for her neighbor (who happens to be an alien) and their journey throughout the series. It was amazing, and if that’s anything to go off of The Darkest Star shouldn’t disappoint. SO why didn’t I pick it up? I did! I bought it, and it’s been on my shelf ever since.... I don’t know!!! I’m like 80% sure I’ll love this but then 20% of me is scared I won’t relate to the younger characters, and that’s what has stopped me from reading YA Fantasy lately. When I read Fantasy, I find myself picking up adult Fantasy. Some of the YA Fantasy I’ve read this year just had me rolling my eyes and sighing, but there were some really good ones. (The Cruel Prince & Three Dark Crowns) I’m like judging a book by it’s genre and I need to stop!!!!!! So my goal is to get to this book in January of 2019 and hopefully start my year on a good note and put myself in a YA mood!

3. Dance of Thieves by Mary E. Pearson

Fun Fact: I met Mary E. Pearson at a book signing in California and she signed two of my books! Now this book I had no intentions on picking up and wasn’t really to excited about it. I mean I didn’t even know what it was about for the longest time. Then I kept hearing the words forbidden romance, and enemies to lovers thrown around and I was hooked. Went to goodreads, did a little research, and clicked that want to read button! and..... it’s been there ever since! I think my biggest problem is actually wanting to spend the 16 something dollars on this book. I guess somewhere in the back of my mind I’m waiting for it to go on BookOutlet or show up in a used bookstore. I mean I’ve heard nothing but good things about this book and the romance so another goal for 2019 is to actually purchase this book!!

When the patriarch of the Ballenger empire dies, his son, Jase, becomes it’s new leader. But a new era blooms and a young queen begins to rise to power, which makes her the target of the dynasty’s resentment and anger. At the same time, Kazi, a former street thief, is sent by the Queen to investigate. When Kazi arrives in the forbidden land of the Ballengers, she learns that there is more to Jase then she thought. As unexpected events occur they are faced with loyalty and challenges, and an unfortunate game of cat and mouse.

This just sounds so good right?! Also I forgot to mention that this is set in the same world as The Remnant Chronicles, which is Mary E. Pearson’s other series! Also I just love the name Jase and that makes me want to read it even more! (What a superficial thing to say lol)

4. Escaping from Houdini by Kerri Maniscalco

This is another one that I would have bet 10 dollars (Because I’m broke) that I would read the day it came out. GOOD THING I DIDN’T because you guessed it, I didn’t read it. This series is one of my favorites and is filled with awesome characters, a Sherlock vibe, and captivating stories!
I loved the first two books, Stalking Jack The Ripper and Hunting Prince Dracula, but since this book came out I’ve seen some pretty iffy reviews. I mean they're all good reviews but they have a pattern to them, and that pattern is what has put me on hold. I am so scared to read this, which is dumb, but I don’t want anything but my precious Thomas Cresswell and Audrey Rose. If you haven’t picked up what I’m throwing down it rhymes with dove pringle. Well more like a new character is introduced and captures the slight fancy or more say attention of our Audrey Rose. I haven’t read it so I can’t even really say anything, but I’m SCURD.
I’m gonna read it though because I need to stop being a chicken and I know from deep investigation that things end up alright, but still that threw a major wrench in my plans. I’m going to buy it soon though, really I should buy it now because it’s 9 dollars at B&N. Yep you heard right, the hardcover is half-off!!! So not to spoil the series, but all you need to know is this is about a crime loving girl in like 1880 something and her partner who is SO swoon worthy you’ll be unlacing your corset!

5. Two Dark Reigns by Kendare Blake

I discovered this series this year and was hooked! Yes I’m admitting to loving a YA series! This series though was just so different, and you can’t help but get hooked and absorbed into the world of these three sisters. I remember finishing the second book and getting so frustrated that I didn’t have the third book in my hands that very moment. If I could tell my past self how crazy I am, she’d probably slap me silly! These books leave you on MAJOR cliffhangers too, so you’d think that would give me motivation to pick it up? Wrong because I’m silly. I even had this book in my hands at B&N then decided to put it down to buy a romance book! Which thank goodness I did because that romance book ended up being one of my favorites of the year, but I mean I do plan on picking this up, just not in 2018. It’s my goal though to make January a make up month and catch up on all these awesome books!

This series is about three sisters who all want to be queen. Unfortunately only one can be and for it to happen the other two must die by that sisters hand. Granted with different powers the three sisters begin their journey to take the throne.

This book is full of crazy. Crazy and addicting! This is a series you won’t want to put down. Clearly I’m crazy for not picking up the third book, but I PROMISE I’m planning on it!

6. Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating

The one and only Romance on this list! Now there were quite a few romance books I didn’t get to, but this one was one that I really wanted to get to, but just unfortunately didn’t have the time or chance to. That’s the only excuse honestly! If I had purchased this book I would have already read it. Why haven’t I purchased it? I DID, B&N is sending this bad boy my way right now.... but it will be here next year. *sad face*

Hazel and Josh have know each other for quite some time, ten years to be exact. They both seemed to find themselves down on their luck in the relationship department. Men find Hazel hard to handle and Josh just ends up getting cheated on. So the solution? They end up setting each other on blind dates...... Because setting each other up on progressively terrible double blind dates means there’s nothing between them.... right?

Sounds good, am I right or am I right?! And it has such excellent reviews so I’m literally so excited for this to come in the mail!

Sadly these books didn’t have their moment in 2018, but I can feel it- 2019 is gonna be their year! (Hopefully mine to) I plan to read these in January, and I’m setting a goal so hold me to it guys! What are some books you wanted to get to in 2018, but didn’t end up reading?
