The Darkest Star

The Darkest Star

by Jennifer L Armentrout
5/5

“That was what I wanted at some point in my life,

for someone to look at me like I looked at tacos.”

I’ve been wanting to read The Darkest Star for a while now, and when I rolled my dice for Romanceopoly and it ended up on Growing Pains Place (YA Fantasy) I knew it was the perfect time to pick up The Darkest Star! And let me tell you, Jennifer L. Armentrout put me in a huge fantasy mood. Honestly I wanted to dedicate myself to rereading the entire Lux Series, but girl.. GIRL. I have way to many books on my tbr.. Even though the force was strong I ended up picking A Gathering of Shadows up. So thank you to the lovely Jennifer L. Armentrout for helping me get started on my long list of fantasy books that have been abandoned on my shelf!
Seventeen year old Evie Dasher is caught up in a raid at a notorious nightclub which is known for being one of the few places where humans and remaining Luxen can mingle. During this raid she meets Luc, a guy she initially assumes is a Luxen, but he is in fact something much more powerful. Her growing attraction for Luc will lead her deeper into a world she’d only ever heard about.
So let me start off by saying that I loved the characters so much, especially Evie. Evie is legit so funny and I’m not 100% sure she’s meant to be funny, but she is and I love it. I also love that nothing felt forced with her character and that the relationship between her and Luc took a slower pace and felt natural, well until you get to that ending BUT, This entire book is paced wonderfully and you can tell she is building up the story for more books. Evie and Luc have legit insane chemistry and the entire book I’m like, Y’all still haven’t hooked up? I kept thinking the book was going to go one way and then it went forty different ways I never thought we’re even possible. Don’t even try guessing because you can't. I had a little suspicion that it was heading the way it was but I was still way off, and I loved that about this book. I’d say I even enjoyed these set of characters more then the Lux Series. I don’t know if it’s just because I haven’t read the original series in a while but I just loved Evie and Luc and can’t wait to see where this series takes them.
So Luc. Well all I can say is like wow, you’re really pretty. And he sure is. From the moment we met Luc I knew I was hooked. I was worried I wouldn’t like him as much as I did Daemon, but I did! He is hilarious and so cocky I just love it! And come on but those adorable freaking shirts he wears makes him even more irresistible! Muggle in the streets, Wizard in the sheets. Yes one of his shirts actually said that, and I knew I was in L-O-V-E then. When we find out one of the major plot points of the book you think Luc only liked Evie because of this but you quickly realize that he is falling in love with who she is now. I know super confusing but just read the darn book because I can’t be anymore descriptive then that, plus Luc is super swoon worthy and that scene a few chapters before the end.... well lets just say if an alien boy that looked like Luc showed up at my door... I’d call the CIA because I’m legit terrified of aliens.. Jk. Not. But for real Luc and Evie go through a lot in just the 300 something pages JL Armentrout writes and I just need so much more already, and I can’t wait.
This book offers much more then just romance too. You’re thrown back into the world of the Luxen, you get kick ass fights to the death, wonderful friendships with supporting characters, LGTB representation, GRAYSON. <----- SIDE NOTE, but Grayson is absolutely hilarious and you’ll love him, and also we see some recurring characters from the first series. One thing I did think was a little weird was the relationship between Evie and her mother, before and after, but I think the author will dive more into that in the other books in this series but other then that this book was all that I hoped for and more, and it exceed every expectation I had! So if you loved The Lux series, or you just want a badass main character and a sexy funny tee wearing Alien then check this book out! If you’ve already read and loved this book you should check out The Dark Elements series, not about Aliens but also by Jennifer L Armentrout and has a lot of similar tropes... I.E. Bad boy ;)
