Be The Girl

Be The Girl

by K.A. Tucker
4/5

“She told me that the sooner you figure out how to like yourself through your own eyes,

the sooner you’ll stop trying to see yourself through everyone else’s.”

As soon as I saw that this book was on Kindle Unlimited I picked it up! This has been on my TBR ever since I saw it was releasing. I love K.A. Tucker and the summary for this book really intrigued me. I knew it would be so much more then just romance, and it was! K.A. Tucker’s work literally gets better and better as she writes more! (except The Simple Wild, that book is phenomenal and I don’t know how she can top that) This is definitely worth your time, and if you’re looking for an emotional YA romance, this is for you!

Almost sixteen-year-old Aria Jones is starting over. New postal code, new last name, new rules. But she doesn’t mind, because it means she can leave her painful regrets behind. In the bustling town of Eastmonte, she can become someone else. Someone better.
With the Hartford family living next door, it seems she will succeed. Sure, Cassie Hartford may be the epitome of social awkwardness thanks to her autism, but she also offers an innocent and sincere friendship that Aria learns to appreciate. And Cassie’s older brother, Emmett—a popular Junior A hockey player with a bright future—well … Aria wishes that friendship could lead to something more. If he didn’t already have a girlfriend, maybe it would.
But Aria soon finds herself in a dicey moral predicament that could derail her attempt at a fresh start. It is her loyalty to Cassie and her growing crush on Emmett that leads her to make a risky move, one that earns her a vindictive enemy who is determined to splinter her happy new world.

Let me start by saying I loved that during this entire book you really have no idea what’s going to happen! You think you do, but then at the end your mind is BLOWN, and honestly I’m so thankful for K.A. Tucker for writing this book the way she did.
Now this books main underlying plot is bullying and the effects on not just the victim but the bully too. Don’t worry it’s sprinkled with some good ol’ boy next door romance, but we also get to see a beautiful friendship bloom between Cassie- who is Emmet’s little sister with autism- and Aria, and I was so appreciative of that and the way it was done. I know I keep repeating myself like a parrot, but when you read this book you’ll also keep thinking how wonderful the writing is.
Cassie is a big part of this book and we get to see a little bit into her life as well, and I loved seeing Cassie become Aria’s first friend in the neighborhood and taking her with her to the animal shelter, and the movies, and also Emmet’s games! This book can be sad at times, not like death (well..) and horrible things... just a little depressing that these things actually happen in real life. Y’all bullying is SUCH a problem and this is so personal to me, and I think really everyone has dealt with some form of bullying in their life... EVEN BULLY’S- scratch that ESPECIALLY BULLY’S, and once you read this book you’ll see how true that is. This brings me back to the beginning when I said that this book took such a huge plot turn, and it did. You have this whole conception throughout the book, and then when the author unleashes her bombshell you’re just shook, at first you’re a little upset but as the chapters creep closer to the end you start to understand and things begin to come together. For a hot minute though I was like dang girl you buried yourself into a hole and I have no idea how you’re gonna climb out, but she did and it’s like in that moment all the puzzle pieces click together and the beginning of the book makes so much sense...well really the entire book does. RANT OVER.
The romance was really cute and very first loveish, I wasn’t too invested into it because I felt like yeah its cute and all, but girl wait until you get into college ;) JUST KIDDING high school sweethearts do exist, I’m literally living proof of that! But the whole vibe I got was that it was a sweet first love, and I didn’t really see them getting married or anything like that. I feel like that was the reason I didn’t give this book a five stars, but the rest of the book was phenomenal and I finished it in one sitting! If you’re looking for an emotional setting with a good friendship, and a crazy plot twist then this is the book for you!

If you have read this book and loved it you should check out The Hard Count by Ginger Scott!
