Being Brooke
by Emma Hart
3/5
“I'm twenty-four, it's a Friday night,
and I'm waiting in for take-out gyros and fries in my onesie.
My life is just so exciting I can barely stand it.”
This book is everything you could want in a quick, cheesy romance! I honestly didn’t think I’d like it as much as I did! Goodreads has it at a 3.84 rating and I feel like that’s actually very accurate. You get what you’d think you’d get with this kind of book. However I still found myself devouring this in one sitting and laughing out loud, oh and LOVING the best friend to lover trope!
My name is Brooke Barker...
And I'm a freaking disaster.
No, seriously. I’m a college drop-out working a dead-end job, my best friend Carly’s dog gets more action than I do, and I have more bad dates in my diary than there are movie remakes.
Not to mention I'm completely and utterly in love with Cain Elliott.
The problem? He’s in a relationship. With a girl who’s so plastic she makes Barbie cry herself to sleep with jealousy.
The second problem? He's my best friend.
My shut-up-and-put-on-Harry-Potter, yes-this-is-your-shirt, help-I-have-no-power, crap-I’m-out-of-tampons, kinda best friend.
And that’s all he can be, right?
Right.
I loved Brooke and Cain! I loved reading their scenes together and their friendship was just the right amount of friendship, and also the right amount of tension! One thing I will say about Brooke is that she is kind of crude and some of the things she says might not be for everyone. It was definitely one of my turn offs for this book. It’s almost like the author tried really hard to make Brooke unique and not “girly” that it went a little far. She was in no way one of the guys, but I felt like the author was trying way to hard to relate to millennial women. Almost to the point where it just went a little to far and was WAY to much sometimes! The romance though makes up for it and it’s definitely my favorite part of this book. I will say though that I feel like the eventual reveal of their feelings was a little flat. I felt like it could have been so much more, and that the book was leading to an EPIC reveal but unfortunately it didn’t happen. So unfortunately that's another factor that led to me giving this book three stars.
Other then our main couple I really did like the side characters and I can’t wait to read their book which is next! Even though I said Brooke is a little over the top at some points she can be relatable and I loved seeing her grow and also seeing that’s it’s okay to take time to figure out what you want to do and that college isn’t necessarily for everybody! I also really liked that she wasn’t absolutely drop dead gorgeous and knew she had faults. It definitely made her character more realistic. Like I said though at some points it was like the author was trying to make her TO realistic. Honestly you know who Brooke and her best friend remind me of? Hannah and Marnie from Girls, OMG now that I say it I can’t believe how true it is. This whole book reminds me of Girls now that I think about it. (P.S. if you haven’t seen that show you’re missing out because it has ADAM DRIVER....just saying.)
So overall this book is a cute and quick read. You love it but I’m also not guaranteeing you won’t hate it, but it has it’s moments and the relationship really is a good one for like 80% of the book. If you can overlook all of that and just want something light and fun to pick up then I definitely suggest this one ! If you have read this book and loved it you should check out When Joss met Matt by Ellie Cahill!
