The Birthday List
by Devney Perry
3/5
“ The rest is still unwritten.”
If you’re even somewhat into the world of romance books then you’ve probably heard about The Birthday List by Devney Perry. You also know that it’s really hyped and super popular. So when I saw that it was free on Amazon for a limited time, I one clicked it! I was so excited and ready for all the emotions!! And I kept waiting...and waiting...and waiting for it to make me cry like a baby or even feel a little emotional... I mean this book was good, but most of the time I was bored. I gave it 3 stars, but I still felt like it took me way to long to read, like a week and I mean I read pretty fast. Like a book a day, so when a book takes more then three days I question it. Unfortunately The Birthday List did not live up to the hype for me. Read the summary, and then we can talk about it!
Poppy Maysen carries a journal in her purse. Its pages were filled long ago by a man who craved adventure, lived life to the fullest and never failed to make her laugh. The journal is his birthday list—one she vows to complete.
She’ll do the things he wanted to do most. Because maybe, just maybe, if she can finish his list, she can start to live again.
Poppy expects going through the birthday list will be hard. She expects it to hurt. But what she doesn’t expect is Cole. Could the man who watched her heart shatter be the one to put it back together again?
For a long time I didn’t pick up this book because I knew something SUPER emotional happened. This is the type of book you have to pick up at the right time and in the right mood, if you don't you won’t enjoy it. Now the big reveal of the book is sad, and yes I can not imagine that ever happening to me and the entire time I was reading this book I kept thinking, oh God how could I ever live through that. My problem with the book though was that it had this huge emotional event and yet it didn’t live up to it? If that makes sense. I felt like I had emotions only on the event itself and not Poppy going through it herself. I guess I just didn’t connect with Poppy or really even Cole. Sure Cole was super cute and I loved that he was a cop, but I felt like they had no connection whatsoever and only some of their scenes were entertaining! I’m trying to not spoil what exactly happens in the book even though it’s not hard to guess. I guess my biggest problem is that I was more invested in Poppy completing the birthday list then I was the romance, and I definitely feel like there should have been more emotion involved all around. Maybe it was Cole too, I don’t know but this book was just lacking something. (my attention, maybe?) You’re probably wondering why I gave it three stars then... WELL I loved the plot in the beginning and I was really invested in the birthday list, like I said before. I also really liked seeing Poppy open her own shop and calling it The Maysen jar, I wish something like that existed near me I would totally go eat food out of mason jars! I mean that's so trendy and cute! I really loved Molly too who is the ex-wife of Poppy’s brother, and also her best friend. Speaking of Molly she will be getting her own book! It actually releases this month!
So yes this book had it’s moments, and maybe I was just prepared for something SO epic going into this book that when it didn’t deliver I was a little disappointed. I still recommend it, because like I said it has it’s moments! If you have read this book and loved it you should check out Forever Right Now by Emma Scott! Let me know if you loved this book, or if you felt it lacked something too! xo
