The Governess Game
by Tessa Dare
4/5
“We should go after the girls.” “Yes, we should.”
Neither of them moved. Alex bit her lip.
“We’re going to kiss instead, aren’t we.” He caught her in his arms.
“You’re goddamned right, we are.”
Ready to fall in love with the scandalous rake who has absolutely no hopes of redemption? This was my first Tessa Dare book, and let me just say her writing is phenomenal. She creates the best banter and her writing just really flows together so nicely. You find yourself nearing then end of the book and wondering how you got there so quickly! It’s so fast paced and fun! After reading this I’m definitely getting more of Tessa Dare’s books. I have a feeling her writing is excellent in every book she writes and that I’ll love the rest of her work as much as I loved The Governess Game! If you want a book with a romance that has you laughing out loud then this book is exactly what you need to pick up!
The accidental governess.
After her livelihood slips through her fingers, Alexandra Mountbatten takes on an impossible post: transforming a pair of wild orphans into proper young ladies. However, the girls don’t need discipline. They need a loving home. Try telling that to their guardian, Chase Reynaud: duke’s heir in the streets and devil in the sheets. The ladies of London have tried—and failed—to make him settle down. Somehow, Alexandra must reach his heart... without risking her own.
The infamous rake.
Like any self-respecting libertine, Chase lives by one rule: no attachments. When a stubborn little governess tries to reform him, he decides to give her an education—in pleasure. That should prove he can’t be tamed. But Alexandra is more than he bargained for: clever, perceptive, passionate. She refuses to see him as a lost cause. Soon the walls around Chase’s heart are crumbling... and he’s in danger of falling, hard.

Let me start off by saying that if you are new to Historical Romance I highly suggest this book. In no way is it intimidating or dramatically filled with romance, you’ll genuinely find yourself just enjoying this book. I feel like this genre is a very intimidating one and a lot of readers shy away from it. I used to be the same way but then I read a Julia Quinn book and my eyes opened to the wonders of Historical Romance. This book is now on my list of my all time favorites for this genre. Like I said, this is the perfect pick for someone new diving into Historical Romance! It’s lighthearted, has an enjoyable easy plot, and the romance is just the right amount!
I knew right away that I liked Chase and Alex. Their meet cute was so charming and funny, and I feel like it set up the path for not just their relationships but the type of characters they would ultimately be. Really one of the parts of this book I was most excited to read about was Alex taking care of the girls and building a relationship with them. I’m a sucker for books with this trope in it, and this book didn’t disappoint. What I liked was how the author doesn’t right away form a relationship between Alex and the girls. She gives it time and allows them to earn her trust and ultimately their love. The author also has wonderful pacing with the relationship. I felt the same way about it as I did with the relationship between Alex and the girls. You know from the very beginning that Chase is a rake and that he has no ideas of marriage or really even taking care of these girls, but as we get more interaction between Alex and Chase and also Chase and the girls, we see that all along he wasn’t just a rake and that their is a lot more to him. However his personality doesn’t change and we get a the same cocky Chase throughout the book. Which honestly thank you Tessa Dare, a lot of time when a character is considered a rake or a player they get reformed and loose their personality. Like all of a sudden they're sappy and serious and don’t even make one scandalous joke. Like isn’t that what we’re here for if we picked this book up in the first place? Well not Chase. He’s a man in love, but he also remains the guy that readers fall in love with throughout the book. The sarcastic cheeky man who has a Cave of Carnality that no good respecting woman would ever step foot in. Overall Chase is just an easy character to love! (SWOON) He has that affectious personality that may be overused, but you can’t help but love. His personality really reminds me of Jace from the Mortal Instruments if that kind of gives you an idea of what he is like! I mean I personally love when male characters have that devious bad boy attitude!
Really guys this book doesn’t have that much depth to it. It is what it is, and it’s really the kind of book you should just pick up. Perfect beach or pool day read! It’s quick and easy, and overall just super enjoyable! If you did read this book and loved it then you should check out The Nordic King by Karina Halle!
