Everything Girl

Everything Girl

by Emily Mayer
3/5

“I love you.” I brought my mouth even closer so that my lips moved

against his. “Maybe even more than coffee.”

Need new book recommendations? Check out author groups on Facebook! It’s how I found out about this book! I’m part of Mariana Zapata’s slow burners group and I find SO many amazing books that are so similar to her writing ! I’ve seen post after post recommending Everything Girl by Emily Mayer. So finally I decided to see if it was on KU or how much it was! It is on KU, so I one clicked it and began reading right away. For 53% of this book I was living for it. It absolutely held up to MZ’s writing and I felt that same sort of addiction you get when reading one of her books. Like you rather die then put the book down!!! Sadly though the second half didn’t live up to the first half... *epic sad face* Overall though it was still an enjoyable read and if you are a fan of MZ I feel like you would enjoy this. Like I said, many people RAVED about this book and it has a high rating on Goodreads so definitely check it out and make your own decision! If you’re like me though and need to see the critical (not necessarily critical, like I said I did enjoy the book) reviews too, then stick around!

Evelyn Mercer has always had a plan. She lives and breathes the plan. The plan and coffee.

Go to law school. Check.

Make Law Review. Check.

Get competitive internship. Check.

Land dream job. Double Check.

That dream job? Yeah, it’s a nightmare, and Evelyn is miserable with a capital M. When she reaches her misery threshold, Evelyn does the unthinkable and deviates from her plan.

Her unexpected new job takes her to Pinehaven Ranch in the middle of nowhere Montana where Evelyn is faced with her biggest obstacle yet. No coffee shops within a 30-mile radius and her new boss’ brother, former rodeo champion Jack Danvers. The three words that best describe Jack are stink, stank, stunning. He is perfection and he inexplicably seems to hate her on sight. But if there is one thing life has taught her, it’s that she still has a lot to learn and Montana is full of surprises.

Soooooooooo....yeah. My review isn’t really critical..., more disappointing? Like I said this book was hyped up and people were praising it like Emily Mayer was the next MZ, annnnnnd there lies the issue. I went in this with such high expectations that I think no matter what, it was going to fall flat. I was very surprised though at some points on how much I was loving it. The first half of this book reads fast and addicting and you won’t want to put it down, but I feel like we reached the climax in the book WAY to soon and then the author just filled scenes in about farm animals and latte’s for the second half of the book..until that last few chapters where we get a conclusion to the story. Speaking of the conclusion of the story I felt like the book should have been at least a 100 pages shorter. This is a lengthy book, 400+ pages.
Let me go in depth a little more with the plot (without spoilers of course). Our main character Evie is going to Montana with her boss for a month and of course there she meets Jack. Jack is moody, dismissive and definitely hates her. So we start to dive into a little bit of the hate to love trope. Which yes, sign me up!! So here we are for about 30% of the book, and then out of NOWHERE Jack just doesn’t hate her anymore. I’m still digging it though because the author makes it seem like she’s going to reveal something huge that will make the reader understand the quick evolution from hate to love. So like I said, Jack no longer hates Evie and we get to see them build a friendship and start to get to know each other. BUT, but. Here we are at the 50-60% mark and all of a sudden Jack is obsessed, calling her BABY and putting all the moves on our girl Evie. Sure that would be great...IF WE HAD A BUILD UP TO IT. One minute they’re shopping for new boots and having latte’s and the next minute they’re making out on the couch and he’s calling her baby and moving WAY to fast.         Maybe it’s just me but I have a big issue in books when characters fall in love way too quickly, throw in pet names like baby and sweetheart (especially if not done right) and I’m out. So yeah at this point in the book I’m barely hanging on and my disappointment is growing. And I was really disappointed because the first half did have that amazing tension and addictiveness to it.
Anyways I continue to wait for some kind of drama to tear them apart, or something to give the story more tension and action, and....nothing. If anything I could have told you how the end of this book would happen before even picking it up and that’s what makes this book 3 stars and a little disappointing. Also remember the whole author lead up and making the reader think something crazy had happened to make Jack suddenly do a 180 in his feelings towards Evie? Well let’s just say that we get the answer around the 75-80% mark and it’s what I predicted, but it’s not even done in a anticipated way. It also has no build up and you’re just left wondering why the author made such a big deal out of Evie wondering about Jack’s sudden change in feelings in the first place. So yeah, this book had so much potential but the second half just didn’t live up to the first half.
Guys, it is enjoyable if you can overlook the insta love and the flat ending. Overall it’s a 3 star read that some people will love and some people won’t. Just one of those books! Some of the things I did love about this book though are the dog- Hank Williams, Evie’s character, Evie’s relationship with her sisters, Jack’s mom, the southern atmosphere, the horse and all the other farm animals, and some of the supporting characters weren’t to bad!
So really my suggestion is to just try this book out for yourself and see how you end up feeling. Did I hate this book? No. Did I love it? No. If you did read this book and want something similar definitely check out The Foxe and The Hound by RS Grey!
