Underrated YA Series

Bonjour! Are you a lover of YA Fantasy? Well you’re in the right place! If you do love YA fantasy then you probably know all about that the current super popular books that almost everyone in the world has read ! *cough* ACOTAR *cough* And you also know that there are hundreds of thousands of YA books out there, so many that it’s almost IMPOSSIBLE to narrow down what you want to read next. SO today I’m going to share with you guys some of my underrated YA fantasy series. Now not every single one that I mention is completely underrated. I mean some of them even have decent amount of reviews, but even then I don’t hear about them as much as other series and they deserve so much more love because.... well they're awesome! So if you want something different then the mainstream reads then read on!!

1. Darkest Powers series by Kelley Armstrong

Kelley Armstrong has two series that are super underrated in my opinion, but my favorite out of the two is the Darkest Power series. It consists of three books; The Summoning, The Awakening, and The Reckoning. Let me tell you, this is everything I want in a YA fantasy series. I have no idea how it only has a low four star rating on Goodreads. This is the type of series you can read over and over again and still love. It is an older series (2008) so keep that in mind, but I do feel like it’s just such a refreshing take on our typical fantasy! If you love just the good old YA with werewolves, magic, boarding school, and lots of other creatures (oh and romance ;) ) then you’ll love this!

My name is Chloe Saunders and my life will never be the same again.
All I wanted was to make friends, meet boys, and keep on being ordinary. I don't even know what that means anymore. It all started on the day that I saw my first ghost - and the ghost saw me.
Now there are ghosts everywhere and they won't leave me alone. To top it all off, I somehow got myself locked up in Lyle House, a "special home" for troubled teens. Yet the home isn't what it seems. Don't tell anyone, but I think there might be more to my housemates than meets the eye. The question is, whose side are they on? It's up to me to figure out the dangerous secrets behind Lyle House... before its skeletons come back to haunt me.

2. Ruby Red by Kerstin Gier

Alright so this one had it’s fifteen minutes of fame and you may or may not remember it, but dang if it isn’t talked about anymore! This series has three books; Ruby Red, Sapphire Blue, and Emerald Green. I love the title and the covers for these book so much, they're so elegant and beautiful! I recommend this series to anyone who is in the mood for a good fantasy. It’s so different from the usual YA, and I feel like it even has a dash of maturity in it that we don’t usually find in young adult books! Something interesting about this book was that it was originally published in Germany! We are so lucky to have a US edition because really this book is magical. If you love Doctor Who or the show Timeless you’ll love this, it dives into the world of time travel and it’s so interesting! Also the romance is a definite slow burn that leans towards the enemies/lovers trope! (not really enemies, but definitely some dislike there) If you want something different from the YA you usually read then definitely check this out!

Although I had never seen him before, I recognized him immediately. I'd have known his voice anywhere. This was the guy I'd seen on my last journey back in time.
Or more precisely, the one who'd kissed my doppelganger while I was hiding behind the curtain in disbelief.
Sixteen-year-old Gwen lives with her extended - and rather eccentric - family in an exclusive London neighborhood. In spite of her ancestors' peculiar history, she's had a relatively normal life so far. The time-traveling gene that runs like a secret thread through the female half of the family is supposed to have skipped over Gwen, so she hasn't been introduced to "the mysteries," and can spend her time hanging out with her best friend, Lesley. It comes as an unwelcome surprise when she starts taking sudden, uncontrolled leaps into the past.
She's totally unprepared for time travel, not to mention all that comes with it: fancy clothes, archaic manners, a mysterious secret society, and Gideon, her time-traveling counterpart. He's obnoxious, a know-it-all, and possibly the best-looking guy she's seen in any century.

3. The Dark Elements Series by Jennifer L Armentrout

Everyone who loves YA knows who Jennifer L Armentrout is! Ever heard of The Lux series? Of course! Well what about the Dark Elements series ?

Alright I SEE you die hard JLA fans in the back! Well Jennifer L Armentrout has a few underrated series and this one is my absolute favorite! It has three books; White Hot Kiss, Stone Cold Touch, and Every Last Breath. This series literally is about Gargoyles! Ever read a book about Gargoyles? I thought so, but don’t worry they're not creepy..Definitely not creepy. ESPECIALLY ROTH. If anything read this book for Roth and Zayne. Their scenes are SOME OF MY FAVORITES. For real though, this series has everything you could want from forbidden romance, the best friend/love trope, friendship, magic, and some serious TENSION. Without spoiling I will let you know that one of the main male characters will be getting his own book...VERY VERY soon. Like as in June 11th and it’s called Storm and Fury. So definitely check out this series guys, and P.S I really want to know why everyone isn’t talking about this series more. It’s SO darn good!

One kiss could be the last.
Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.
Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever.
Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul.
But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne… it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

4. Bloodlines by Richelle Mead

Circa 2008 and The Vampire Academy just hit it’s peak of popularity. Skip to a few years later, and sadly the series has ended. A sad time for all Dimitri and Rose fans, but a bright new time for fans of Adrian, yes you heard right Adrian. Everyone knows about TVA, but a series I rarely hear anyone talk about is the Bloodlines Series. This series has six books; Bloodlines, The Golden Lily, The Indigo Spell, The Fiery Heart, Silver Shadows, and The Ruby Circle. For those of you who don’t know Adrian was a character that was introduced into TVA, and eventually gets his own spinoff. Speaking of that spinoff.... Why is it not just as hyped as The Vampire Academy!!! I’m so shocked! In my opinion The Bloodlines series is so much more mature and well written, we get to see how far the authors writing has come and I love Adrian’s character so much. Him and Sydney are so much fun to read about, and really the best word to describe them is partners, a team. If you love The Vampire Academy or really any good fantasy with a vampire romance then definitely check this series out!

I wasn't free of my past, not yet.
Sydney's blood is special. That's because she's an alchemist - one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets - and human lives. But the last encounter Sydney had with vampires got her in deep trouble with the other alchemists. And now with her allegiences in question, her future is on the line.
When Sydney is torn from her bed in the middle of the night, at first she thinks she's still being punished for her complicated alliance with dhampir Rose Hathaway. But what unfolds is far worse. Jill Dragomir - the sister of Moroi Queen Lissa Dragomir - is in mortal danger, and the Moroi must send her into hiding. To avoid a civil war, Sydney is called upon to act as Jill's guardian and protector, posing as her roommate in the unlikeliest of places: a human boarding school in Palm Springs, California. The last thing Sydney wants is to be accused of sympathizing with vampires. And now she has to live with one.
The Moroi court believe Jill and Sydney will be safe at Amberwood Prep, but threats, distractions, and forbidden romance lurk both outside - and within - the school grounds. Now that they're in hiding, the drama is only just beginning.

5. The Covenant Series by Jennifer L Armentrout

Last but not least (so cheesy) is another from JLA. This is her other series that I’d say is pretty underrated, probably even more then The Dark Elements. This series has five books; Half Blood, Pure, Deity, Apollyon, and Sentinel. This came out in 2011, and if I’m being honest, IF, This is very similar to The Vampire Academy. Almost if like The Vampire Academy and The Percy Jackson series had a baby. Weird, right? Well this series is a blend of those two. Instead of dealing with Vampires we get demigods and all other classes of Gods, but the setting is the same (boarding school), and we get the same kind of generic plot line. HOWEVER, this does not in anyway take away from how amazing this series is. IN fact I think this scares off a lot of people and that’s why it’s so underrated. It’s okay to like cheesy things, it’s okay to read the same kind of story over and over again! I’m just saying that if an author can take something that isn’t to unique and still make it captivating and a good story, then I’d say they did their job and beyond! I will say though that I feel like this is teetering on the edge of YA, like dangling over the cliff with one hand gripping onto a branch that in no way is going to hold you for much longer. I do think that does make the story better though! I feel like if the characters were a little less NA and more YA then it wouldn’t be as good, a lot more campy and immature. Jennifer L Arementrout did bring the heat though and this series is a steamy, gripping, and exciting read and if you love Mythology or really just love reading I highly suggest this series!
The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi pure bloods have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals--well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures.
Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden. Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is.
If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.

I hope you guys found at least one series that caught your eye, and as always I’d love to know what some of your favorite underrated reads were, or even just your current favorite read!
