Warm Bodies
by Isaac Marion
4/5
“My friend “M” says the irony of being a zombie is that
everything is funny, but you can’t smile, because your lips
have rotted off.”
This book was really weird. Nothing like I’ve read before! Verdict? I loved it! I did listen to the audiobook so I feel like that had a lot to do with how much I liked it. Mostly though it's just enjoyable, different and FUNNY! I laughed out loud multiple times during this book, and I feel like I laughed at things that shouldn't have been funny... I mean this author did an awesome job. This is the perfect audiobook! It reads like a movie, and the narrator does an EXCELLENT job with all the voices, especially the zombies!
R is having a no-life crisis- he is a zombie. He has no memories, no identity, and no pulse, but he is a little different from his fellow Dead. He may occasionally eat people, but he’d rather be riding abandoned airport escalators, and listening to Sinatra in the cozy 747 he calls home.
And then he meets a girl.
First as his captive, then his reluctant guest, Julie is a blast of living color in R’s gray landscape. He doesn’t want to eat this girl, he wants to protect her, but their unlikely bond will cause ripples they can’t imagine.
So the BEST part of this book is that we are getting R’s perspective, yes that’s right...The Zombie’s. Like I said the narrator does an excellent job giving character and life to not just R, but the rest of the characters as well.
So jumping to R, well you can tell right away he isn’t like the other zombies. I loved him and all of his quirks, and the scenes with him and his best friend M had me dying!! I found it really interesting that R’s view on the entire “plague” was that alive or not they were all people, people who had previous lives, jobs, families and friends. I don't want to say to much because it’s really hard not to spoil this book, and honestly when you start reading it you’ll quickly realize where this plot is heading.. I mean I figured it out almost as soon as R met Julie. Also I was a little confused at first with the whole Perry/R thing. It’s not really a spoiler, but R eats Perry and gets to see his memories and that’s how he forms a connection with Julie. What I was confused about at first was that I thought we were reliving some of R’s own memories (because remember we don't know his name or past life), and then the author finally clarified what was going on and that when a zombie eats a living persons brain they get to relive their memories. The confusion as well as the easy plot is why I gave this book 4 and not 5 stars, and I’m sure if I physically read this book it would have been a 3.8/4 read.
This is definitely one I recommend picking up the audiobook for, also it’s really short! There isn’t really much more to say about this book other then that I loved Julie and R getting to know each other and exploring not just friendship but R’s humanity. M was hilarious and I also really liked Nora, who is the sarcastic wine loving best friend of Julie. So if you want something unlike anything you’ve ever read before then I definitely suggest Warm Bodies ! Also there is a movie which came out around 2013.... I think? Anyways I’m watching it tonight and I'm excited to see the characters I just spent the last two days listening to on the screen! If you have read this book and want something like it.... Well I have no idea, so let me now some of your favorite Zombie reads! xo
