Becoming Calder
by Mia Sheridan
3.5/5
“As long as we’re both under the same moon,
we’ll always find a way to each other.”
Now I’ve read a few of Mia Sheridan’s books, and my favorite is definitely Archer’s Voice. One thing I can absolutely say for certain is that Mis Sheridan creates unique books! I mean I’ve never read a romance book that involved a cult, and now thanks to Mia Sheridan I have! It was definitely interesting and had me on the edge of my seat for certain parts! So lets dive in the world of Arcadia !
There is a place in modern day America with no electricity, no plumbing, and no modern conveniences. In this place, there is no room for dreams, no space for self-expression, and no tolerance for ambition.
In this place, there is a boy with the body of a god and the heart of a warrior. He is strong and faithful and serves his family honorably. But he dares to dream of more.
In this place, there is a girl with the face of an angel and a heart full of courage. To her family, she is the vision of obedient perfection. But she dares to want that which she has been told can never be hers.
A quick fyi this book is a duet, so there is a part two to Calder and Eden’s story, but with the way book one went for me I don’t plan on picking up book two any time soon. Let me clarify a bit for you guys.. Did I hate the book?? NO! I actually enjoyed most of it, and like I said it’s absolutely like nothing I’ve ever read before but some parts of it just fell flat for me. I will say one thing and that is Mia Sheridan hooks you in from the very beginning and something about her writing is SO epic and addictive! Even then though I felt like the story was just...alright? Calder was born into this world of Arcadia (so a cult), and the leader and people of this group believe that one day a giant flood will come and they'll all travel to Elysium and be with the gods... This same leader also believes that a ten year old girl is his future bride, sicko.

This book starts when our MC is 10-12 and then fast forwards over the years, right up to the point where Eden is about to turn 18. One of my biggest issues with this book is the relationship. It happened a little to fast and I was so prepared for this epic love that was forbidden and full of angst and yet on the angst meter it was about a three. I still read the book pretty quickly and I was absorbed into the story, but as soon as Calder and Eden left Arcadia I was trying to just skim quickly to the end. The ending of this book was legit though, I will say that. You'll definitely feel frustrated and even sad on Calder and Eden's behalf. Half of the time I wanted to murder the leader of the cult. WHAT. A. SICK. MANIPULATIVE. butthole... I wanted to say something way worse then butthole, but I'm pretty sure you get my drift! Read this book, and you'll se why I hate him. I'm pretty sure the point f his character was to be a villain but the sad truth was that he was SO realistic and really were the things he did bad? His people knew what he was doing and yet the people who CHOSE to join this cult know what they're getting in to. Ahhh so frustrating!
Overall though this book was okay and parts of it I really enjoyed, but I just needed a bit more in the emotional department and definitely more from the relationship! It’s almost like the book was right there on the verge of being amazing but then it lacked that tiny little spark that would have sent it over the edge! Who knows though, maybe I’ll pick up the second book eventually!
If you have read this book and want more from this author definitely check out Archer’s Voice or Most of All You!
